Day 1 (L/D)
Kuching Hotel pick up and drop off at the Semenggoh Orang Utan Wildlife Sanctuary to witness the orangutans’ feeding time at 9.00 am. Drive up to Saloma Villagestay for an authentic Bidayuh lunch. After lunch or later in the afternoon, we will visit the original Bidayuh village and longhouse to see and experience how the natives live in their traditional habitat, which has been passed down through generations. Learn how bamboo plays an integral part in their daily lives. Visit the local ala-resort Christian missionary primary boarding school (St. Bernard, Sadir) and also the basket/mat weaver’s house*.
Night trek (optional, depending on weather conditions): After dinner, go for a short evening walk to see the small creatures of the night. Fireflies with their blinking lights are always a favorite, even among locals. You may choose to mingle with the locals or have a free and easy time at our ‘surrounded by trees’ balcony.
Day 2 (B/L/D)
After breakfast, we will trek through the forest and jungle to the family farm (25-minute hike). Along the way, you will be introduced to the local flora, wild herbs, and vegetables, and learn about their uses. En route, you will have the chance to carry out ‘jungle shopping’ — gathering edible fruits, shoots, and leaves to be cooked and consumed at the farmhouse.
You will also see local varieties of crops planted for personal consumption as well as commercial cash crops sold daily by the locals. At the farmhouse, you will witness and participate in bamboo cooking. All the dishes are prepared and cooked using specially made bamboo utensils. Even our herbal tea is sourced locally from the jungle, cooked in bamboo, and served in bamboo cups — these delicacies cannot be found in any restaurant!
You can take a refreshing dip in the cool mountain stream and see the local fish species, assist with farm work, or simply relax in the farmhouse. Trek back to Saloma Villagestay. After dinner, we will go for another evening walk to see the creatures of the night, including fireflies with their blinking lights — always a favorite among locals. Afterwards, you can relax with the villagers and listen to their stories. For those who wish to stay up longer, rice wine and beer are available for purchase at the village shop.
Day 3 (B)
After breakfast, we will trek to the waterfall (35-minute walk) for a refreshing swim or simply marvel at Mother Nature’s creation. You will have the chance to listen to the beautiful symphony of the forest and rivers — music to the ears. Here, you will also be introduced to local flora and wild herbs and their uses. If you are lucky enough to visit during the summer months, you will witness the beautiful colors of the jungle and wildflowers in bloom.
Trek back to Saloma Villagestay for lunch before driving back to Kuching. Departure time is 1:00 pm, but it can be flexible with prior arrangement.
