Overview

Mulu National Park: A Natural Wonder of Borneo
Gunung Mulu National Park, commonly known as Mulu National Park, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the Malaysian state of Sarawak on the island of Borneo. Established in 1974 and designated as a World Heritage Site in 2000, the park is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity, dramatic limestone karst formations, vast cave systems, and unique rainforest ecosystems. Covering an area of approximately 544 square kilometers, it is one of Southeast Asia’s most remarkable natural treasures.

Famous Caves of Mulu
Mulu National Park is famous for its extensive limestone cave systems, many of which are among the largest and most spectacular in the world:
Sarawak Chamber – The largest known cave chamber on Earth, capable of fitting around 40 Boeing 747 airplanes.
Deer Cave – Home to one of the world’s largest cave passages and millions of wrinkle-lipped bats that create a breathtaking evening exodus.
Clearwater Cave – One of the world’s longest cave systems, featuring a beautiful underground river and crystal-clear water.
Lang’s Cave – Renowned for its stunning stalactites, stalagmites, and delicate cave formations.
These caves were formed over millions of years by the dissolution of limestone, resulting in sharp pinnacles, sinkholes, and underground rivers that define the park’s karst topography.

Biodiversity
Mulu National Park hosts an incredible variety of plant and animal life, thanks to its diverse habitats that range from lowland rainforest to montane forests.
Flora: Over 3,500 species of plants, including rare orchids, pitcher plants, and towering dipterocarp trees.
Fauna: Home to over 200 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish, including hornbills, gibbons, and bats.
The park’s unique ecosystems provide a sanctuary for both endemic and endangered species.

Activities for Visitors
Visitors to Mulu National Park can enjoy a variety of activities:
Cave Exploration – Guided tours through Deer Cave, Clearwater Cave, and other remarkable caverns.
Canopy Skywalk – One of the world’s longest tree-top walkways, offering stunning views of the rainforest.
Trekking – Trails range from easy walks to challenging multi-day hikes, including the famous trek to the Pinnacles, a cluster of razor-sharp limestone spires on Mount Api.
Bat Exodus – Watching millions of bats emerge from Deer Cave at dusk is a must-see natural spectacle.

Cultural Heritage
The park is also home to indigenous groups such as the Penan and Berawan peoples, who have lived in the region for centuries. Their traditions, knowledge of the rainforest, and sustainable lifestyle add cultural depth to the park’s natural wonders.
